Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing these medications should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
